The Sunday Poem: Kell D. Robertson . . . Wine Drinking Song

WINE DRINKING SONG

                                       for Nick & others

Red wine            so sweet             it's impossible

             shudder follows shiver

                                        DEElicious

& one poor boy
wastes your head

                              PORT

& the white brother

                                   TOKAY
                                   toque
                                   touch
            or Thunderbird
                                   which James Mason serves
                                   his gentle friends

"but that's bullshit baby, we know who it's for!"

in cold back alleys
bought with hustled coin
                                          Tourist Trash
                                          & Chinatown behind

"I know there's something in your head!
    I know. I've seen it!"

& never before
a lay like that
never an armpit so
                              real
baby I'm off & on again

                                       sourmouth morning to
                                       sweeetongued evening

0 man have you got any coins, any coins?

& the old Italians pass like ponderous bears
& the old Chinamen.........

Kell D. Robertson

The Spring 2011 issue of the Malpaís Review features the work of Kell Robertson, I just ran across this poem from our correspondence and it speaks to the core of Kell. There is a plan to do a big book of Kell's work, Malpais says. Check out this appreciation from Outlaw Poetry. The drawing above is one Kell did for the cover of The Saga of Thunderlip Jones. He said of himself "I was born in Rooks County, Kansas & raised in Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi, Kentucky, Oklahoma, New Mexico & Arizona. From 14 on I spent most of my time in public libraries, pool halls, honky tonks, on construction jobs & somebody else's farm picking and hoeing things. I have an eighth grade education & a diploma to prove it. I stay alive by writing poems & playing a guitar & singing Hillbilly songs & blues." Rest in peace Kell, you were a life-long friend.

Great poetry event on June 8th out in Placitas. Levi Romero and Sherwin Bitsui will be featured in the Duende Poetry Series now in its 10th year.3 PM with an open reading after as time permits. It's free, relevant and enjoyable so there's no excuse for not being there if you value poetry at all. What an event. See you! For info go to the Anasazi Fields Winery site..

Submit poems to theditchrider@gmail.com  I am your guest editor, but only presently. Thank you, Larry Goodell
