What's going on, Albuquerque?

Erm....First and Central IS a standard intersection right now. But one of the main problems with that whole area is that it is a gathering spot for the homeless and general loiterers. I find it hard to believe that people will feel comfortable coming to an "Entertainment District" in that spot.
OBTS, I would imagine that would change pretty quickly if this plan goes through...both the Downtown Action Team "ambassadors" and APD would surely have more motivation to run people off from a multi-million dollar "entertainment district" than from the current vacant dirt lot...
True enough, Phil_0--but I think it will be harder to attract a developer with the situation as it is now. Chicken-egg situation.
I think the city should invest in the railroad yard and ignore this piece of dirt. The railroad yard has interesting architecture/history and could actually become an extension of the community center. The buildings just need some TLC - general cleanup, replacement of windows and re-purposing. Place an open-air market in there, and downtowners will flock to it.
I don't see how a noisy intersection (trains in back, buses/cars in front) could be an entertainment center without enclosing the entire lot. And that takes a lot of money. Maybe since the city is so set on doing the transit BRT, and the present tunnel under the train is so small, they could possibly expand the tunnel north, and use this land for tunnel access and an additional transit site. Just a thought....
OBTS, I assumed the article's mention of "walkability" was implying that changes are coming for the pedestrian underpass below the train tracks, though that's not actually the 1st/Central intersection. Maybe they mean that they're turning that curve of 1st St just north of Central into a 2-way and getting rid of the dedicated lane on the right for Copper? I just want them to fix the pedestrian connection between Edo and downtown....
