• Bernalillo County is moving out of downtown.
  • No one should be surprised that there are major problems with state issued teacher evaluations, nor that Skandera takes no responsibility for the issues.
  • Rio Rancho struggles.
  • APD has lost a total of 14 officers in the line of duty, since 1886.
  • An impressive practice of sustainable living in our own South Valley.

Whoa, Bernco moving out of downtown?  That will suck mightily for any plans to revitalize downtown--and for any existing businesses.  Maybe the city should try to convince Bernco not to move away?  Plus...if the motivation for the consolidation and move is to make it so that all county services are in one spot and more convenient, they'd sure as hell BETTER move to a spot served by the bus system...

I am not one to make light of police fatalities, but it should probably be noted that the 14 officers lost since 1886 represent a little less than 2/3 of the citizens killed by police since 2010. Just something to think about when those standing in the way of police reform start talking about "dangerous jobs."

Why not merge county government with the city and do away with the county government? That could potentially save a lot of money assuming we eliminated duplicate fiefdoms.

I was part of the team that looked at moving the county into 500 Marquette (the old Petroleum Club building).  Man, that would've been perfect for them.  Plenty of space, immediately adjacent to City Hall and its council chambers, accessible by public transit.  Unfortunately the owners of the building kept wavering on the price.

Losing 700 employees could be a death knell for Downtown.  The streets have been looking pretty desolate lately anyhow - how can these restaurants hope to stay in business with that kind of an outflux of potential lunch patrons?

And from a customer service standpoint, there is enough confusion between county and city services that moving the two groups apart from one another could really disrupt convenience to the public.

Regarding HinkyDink's suggestion to shift to a city-county metropolitan model, I'm not so sure that would work.  Part of the benefit of having the two separate now is that the County can represent the unincorporated parts of the region.  A combined government risks abandoning the rural areas - something that occurs plenty already.

So for a period of 21yrs, from 1959-80, which encompassed some of the most turbulent times for social upheaval in the US, APD lost no officers in the line of duty.  That's somewhat amazing to me and I wonder if maybe the current administration shouldn't look back at what their officers then were doing differently than now.
