What's going on, Albuquerque?
Heh....about that erased crosswalk....on Sunday mornings, there was a "Watch for Pedestrians in Crosswalk" sign that I imagine the Presbyterian church put up. When I was a kid, our family would drive by that crosswalk on our way to our church just east of Immanuel Presbyterian and I remembered thinking the sign said "Watch for Presbyterians in Crosswalk." I thought those Presbyterians had some nerve asking for people to watch out just for them.
But on a more serious note, our city Municipal Planning and Traffic Engineering Depts' REALLY need to get it through their thick heads that we NEED MORE CROSSWALKS. in this city. I am constantly shocked that they took out the light and crosswalk on Central at the Fairgrounds--on weekends it is really dangerous with all the people darting across the street to go to the flea market.
More than crosswalks, Nob Hill needs to put in sidewalks. Carlisle in particular is missing a good 20-30% of its sidewalks. Plus, honestly, with cars flying down the hill of Carlisle to Central, having a crosswalk there is dangerous. The light is all of a block away and makes it much safer for crossing.
Maybe, just maybe Krista, APD could enforce speed limits? The answer is to change the culture of letting cars have it all. There was once a crosswalk there and there wasn't carnage. It could be that way again. The speed limit on Carlisle on that stretch is 30 mph (or is it 25 mph?). Cars shouldn't be flying on that road. Basta.
True, true. The speed limit is 25, but I can attest to the fact that most people don't abide by that. I guess I'm thinking realistically, but it is nice to be optimistic. :)
