Hey, I need some landscaping done that all the neighbors agree would be nice and add to the value of the neighborhood - do you think the city will pay for that?

Seriously, I guess putting in streets and sidewalks for the public is appropriate, but for this developer to have wanted almost $2 M for tax breaks for yet another shopping center stinks - Trudi Jones is a commercial real estate agent - she'll vote for these types of projects every time.

The EP times must be a little confused...Elfego Baca's father was an anglo? I don't know too many anglos named Francisco Baca.

Shotsie, I agree 100% about the Unser project. Trudy Jones is frequently a huge embarrassment...the fact that she ran unopposed in her district is incredibly discouraging.

Sarah, I don't think too many people in the late 19th century called themselves "hispanic"...that's a 20th-century term as far as I know. It might have been, though, that "Spanish" northern New Mexicans were considered white enough to satisfy 19th-century Kansans.

"They are proposing the city pay $1.8 million to improve the roads and sidewalks surrounding the future retail site.

That is money the retail developer would have had to pay out of his own pocket. Officials say the developer was not willing to pay for the shopping complex—which includes a Lowe's, Defined Fitness and restaurants, unless he got a $1.8 million tax break. "

So, instead of the tax break, the developer got infrastructure built for him for the same amount, so he got what he wanted - taxpayer-subsidized development - $1.8M in impact fees wiped-out. Of course, every developer will want this - why should they have to pay for road access, stoplights, sewer connections, etc... Just stick it to the rest of the taxpayers.
