Who finished the 2008 Albuquerque Century?

2wheelz sponsored the bagpipers and dozens of local photographers played witness to New Mexico's biggest urban cycling event this past weekend, The Albuquerque Century.

Were you there? Did you finish? I can't find any news from the MSM on what's actually a popular annual event for the growing legions of Duke City cyclists.

In lieu of stories, check out the scene in the Albuquerque Century 2008 photo pool. And if you joined the race or were there taking photos, fill us in!

Mesa, mountain, North Valley, South Valley, Downtown, Corrales, Sandia Pueblo, Isleta Pueblo. 50 degrees, 95 degrees. 12-foot wide tunnels through trees, 100 mile vistas. Warm water bottle, espresso in Bernalillo. All make the 100 miles seem shorter.

My wife and I finished. It was her first century - and it ended up being 110 miles! We went a few extra miles looking for a replacement bolt for my seat. At mile 60 my seat bolt cracked in half and my seat fell off.

But I am still in awe of the unicyclist!

I took pics. I have a few here. The Heart Hospital photo is mine and they were one of the sponsors. It was a wonderful event to watch. I don't think I could have done it personally; it has been WAY too long since I have done more than about 10 or 15 miles on a bicycle.

Mike, one word...OUCH!

I was in awe of that unicyclist too!

The unicyclist did 50 miles, I believe. There is a picture of a couple on a tandem with her on the back doing what looks like texting (she told me she was actually entering a number into the phone)--I picked those people up on the Tramway hill. He had food poisoning or something--anwyay, he had started out sick, but soldiered along for 90 miles--well, more, because I dropped them at the Tramway stop and from there they biked on home. The last people in were a young couple who had had two flats, but were determined to do the whole damn thing. And they did.

Chantal, it is too bad the Journal didn't think this was newsworthy. 900+ cyclists on the road just isn't interesting, I guess. That and the raft race was moved to the same day (dumb, dumb, dumb). So guess which event gets covered?

Hi Mike,

Congrats on the ride with Jon. If you get a chance, will you email me about your NM Boys State post? I'd like to offer some suggestions.
