Get on board! Words ride the bus for free...

Ask and ye shall receive!

Happily, my lament over poetry on the bus this spring coincided with a renaissance of the City's competition - just announced for this summer.

Oh how do you love this City? Let's count the ways - up to 50 words, that is.

Send up to 2 poems to the City by JULY 7 (revised deadline). As far as I know, there is no theme, so send your best shot on any topic. Remember, this is people's poetry. All of us can be poets!

Seattle's program regularly receives thousands of submissions. And they don't even HAVE any famous poets! (Just kidding, Seattle...) So don't be shy, Burque. Puts those pens to paper and send in your thoughts...

An application can be downloaded here (warning - >3MB file... have something handy to research while you wait, like ... Seattle's poetry on the bus submissions from 2007...)

Chantal, goddess that she is, just posted a manageable size PDF here.

To prove anyone can do this, here's my submission from 2005:

Out on a Limb

We grow slow --
not quite like rock into sand
but slower than tumbleweeds
blowing away like seasons
down Albuquerque roads
we all avoid together.

We three branches on this
cultural tree --
our bark grows thicker
than our bite
when what we can sink our teeth into now
tastes like water from our entwined roots.

P.S. I would love to host people's submissions here or link to them on your own pages... I think DCF is the next best place (second only to a RapidRide bus) to read and share poetry...

Thanks, Michael, they updated it late today. As did I!

Just an FYI I emailed the coordinator and asked:
Is the poetry on the bus contest limited to Albuquerque residents?
The reply:
No... the contest is for the greater Albuquerque area.. Valencia and Sandoval counties.

So I guess with a June 30 deadline, I'm out since I don't move to the city until July 15.... though nowhere does it say officially that it is limited to Albuquerque or even New Mexico residents.
