kenny,
as long as religion plays such a prominent role in the politics and public sphere of this country, you can forget about modernity and enlightenment.

Yay for more buses (and bike racks). I've been denied 2 of the last 5 times I've tried to get my bike on an ABQ Ride bus.

PhilO: The bus drivers are supposed to allow you to bring your bike ON the bus if the racks are full and the bus isn't packed. Obviously, if the bus is SRO with people, the driver will not let you and your bike on, but I understand the drivers are supposed to let you bring your bike on board. If a driver doesn't, get the bus number--or driver's name and report it.

It'd be helpful if more buses had racks that hold three bikes, as well.

Jeff, you make a good point, but the problem is not religion per se. It is the use of religion by some to control others. Religion in and of itself is a good thing.

tricross (notice i omitted the extra 's' this time!)
your argument seems circular to me. isn't the control of others at the very heart of religion?
i'm not talking about personal 'spirituality' or a life that acknowledges transcendent experiences - just religion.

"Just when you think you live in a modern and enlightened society, someone comes along and slaps you upside the head reminding you that we still have a long ways to go."

I don't know what society you're referring to... take a look at the news lately? We're, me you and everyone on this board, are paying for a war that we know was started on false pretenses and that innocent people are dying everyday... doesn't sound civilized to me. Racism is an every day occurrence in this city but it usually takes swastikas to get people talking about it.

Jeff, I hear where you're coming from but I doubt the heads of defense contracting companies that help perpetuate chaos and murder around the world are sitting in church every sunday... nor about 80% of our politicians, regardless of how many times they cite God in their speeches.

OBTS: at least one driver in the last week has let me on, and she told me much the same thing. One of the buses that denied me could have been full - they didn't slow down enough for me to tell - but I think the second driver was just lazy or late. Next time it happens I'll file a complaint.

Yes, I believe that I am talking about ones personal beliefs, personal religion if you may, rather than organinzed religion. I am not a huge fan of organized religion. But I due believe that personal religion, spirituality, whatever, is very healthy as long as it is not at the cost of others.

i won't disagree with that tricross.
