It's the solstice moon tonight. Please refrain from any pagan snarking because what the solstice moon means is for many geometrically- and optically-related reasons, the moon will look flipping HUGE tonight.

According to the Farmer's Almanac, moonrise will be at 8:52 p.m. tonight in Albuquerque. Enjoy, maybe indulge in a bit of howling.

However, if you hold a dime at arm's length and look at the moon when it seems to be huge, (low on the horizon), then do the same when it's higher in the sky, appearing smaller...you'll see that the moon is the same size. Your perspective has changed.

This morning at 4:45 I was heading north on I-25 to Santa Fe and watching the moon from my rearview mirror. Ginormous. Golden. Orb. A photo op if I ever saw one!

Great article, Alexis---thanks for posting it. I noticed the moon last night, but didn't realize all the background behind the "solstice moon". I'll definitely be checking it out from up on the deck tonite!!

I nearly got eaten by coyotes last night at the volcanoes trying to take this shot:

Shoulda used a tripod (and own a better camera), but it was beautiful nonetheless. Plus, we got to see this fire break out in the South Valley about 8:30pm:
