It's the solstice moon tonight. Please refrain from any pagan snarking because what the solstice moon means is for many geometrically- and optically-related reasons, the moon will look flipping HUGE tonight.

Check out this story from NASA.

According to the Farmer's Almanac, moonrise will be at 8:52 p.m. tonight in Albuquerque. Enjoy, maybe indulge in a bit of howling.

Great minds think alike. I put a link to the same article in my blog today too! Looks like a great photo op tonight. Possibly from Petroglyph Park?

However, if you hold a dime at arm's length and look at the moon when it seems to be huge, (low on the horizon), then do the same when it's higher in the sky, appearing smaller...you'll see that the moon is the same size. Your perspective has changed.

Nice! I'm definitely going out tonight.

For others interested in scoping out a primo location, I've created a Google Map of excellent options for sunset photography in Albuque....

This morning at 4:45 I was heading north on I-25 to Santa Fe and watching the moon from my rearview mirror. Ginormous. Golden. Orb. A photo op if I ever saw one!

Great article, Alexis---thanks for posting it. I noticed the moon last night, but didn't realize all the background behind the "solstice moon". I'll definitely be checking it out from up on the deck tonite!!

I nearly got eaten by coyotes last night at the volcanoes trying to take this shot:

Full moon rising from the Albuquerque Volcanoes

Shoulda used a tripod (and own a better camera), but it was beautiful nonetheless. Plus, we got to see this fire break out in the South Valley about 8:30pm:

I smelled that fire! I had every intention of heading out where you went. Just not enough hours in my day. Nice pics!
