to Burque or not to Burque... what does it really mean?

I am in the process of putting together an online user group for a very cool software developer I am sorta - kinda working with (no, not KeyToSound). Anyways, the format that the company has been using for its user group "badge" or graphic seems a little bit to small to spell out "Albuquerque", so I thought, "Hey, I'll just say Burque..." but I really didn't know if it was proper etiquette or not (kinda like calling San Fransciso "Frisco" which is a big no-no when referring to the city by the bay and if you do, you will immediately have the word "tourist" tattoo'd on your forehead).

So in order to get some more information and to find out if this Gringo could even say "Burque" without getting a virtual beatdown, I did a little googlin' and found this link:

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=burque

hehehe... this link is a great read. I had scene the "Q" thing around town and thought it was more of an advertising agency's thingy rather than the city mayor... kinda reminds me of the "Q" guy from Star Trek (that weirdo that spoke in riddles that no one could ever figure out, so they just labeled him fucked up).

I am happy to report that I am going to go for it. I'm going to create my user group badge and use "Burque" with a confident demeanor, knowing that true Duke City citizens will give me the nod.

I like Burque. It riles up the right people. It's kinda like the poor stepchild of "the City Different." As soon as you hear it on the news, drop it like it's hot.

Hmmm.... yeah, I guess it's either "Burque" or "ABQ", maybe I'll have to go with ABQ seeing as most people in the U.S. don't even realize that Albuquerque is in New Mexico, let alone know that Burque is slang for it. That's too bad... heh, I was giving a UPS guy my shipping address one time and he asked me to spell Albuquerque... I said to just use the abbreviation (because I wasn't happy with the company at the time and wanted to be short with him). He put down ALB.... sad sad sad...

Just don't say "Burke", okay?

fortunately, the zip code didn't match the ALB abbreviation... thank god for computers...

I think I am going to lean towards just a simple "ABQ" title... Terms of endearment like "Burque" and "Duke City" should be reserved for us insiders... and held in a special way.

Burque all the way!!! It is nothing like "Frisco" in San Francisco. I know I used to live there. People here won't correct you if you say Burque. It's old school and cool and something my dad used to say. And since I am a native Burquena, I can't tell you how stupid I think "The Q" sounds.

ABQ gets a distant second vote from me.

I had fill out an online survey for my health insurance company. The form would not accept Albuquerque as the city, but it took ABQ.

The user group admin (who I'm setting this group up for) basically asked "why not just say New Mexico?" hmmmm... he may have a point there.
