All months have their markers I suppose. I’m sure they are different for each of us depending on your personal interests, or important family dates like birthdays. Frequently those markers are holidays like Valentines Day, Thanksgiving Day or even solar events like the Summer Solstice.
For those who are gardeners and outdoor types, January can be a gloomy time though, grey and depressing. OK, sure, there’s New Year’s Day, but bowl games and hangovers can be kind of boring and hangovers can hurt, too. It's cold outside! It’s gonna be months before we can play in the dirt and enjoy fresh salads from the backyard or the blooms in our gardens.
But wait! All is not lost. There is a parade coming around the corner! January can be looked to with some anticipation because it marks the beginning of the "Parade of Catalogs". This is our opportunity to gleefully flip pages to discover the latest varieties and colors and to dream of new plans for that corner flower bed or the border next to the driveway that has been full of weeds for the last two years. Have you ever noticed that January’s flower beds NEVER have weeds? It’s a time to make lists and to share catalogs with friends so as to get better discounts with quantity purchases. Time to dig out those lists of things you need for next season and to look at all the latest in tools and new models of what you already have.
Watch for the postman (uhhh -- mail carrier) because today marks the beginning of the Parade! I’ve already got part of my seed list and bee list made out. Happily humming, looking, planning and dreaming......
