SILVER & JEFFERSON SE--Tonight I took MaryAnn to the most romantic restaurant I know, Los Equipales. Well hidden a block south of Central and surrounded by walls, Los Equipales is a true diamond in the rough. The food is great--mostly Mexican seacoast fare.
The ambiance makes every visit special. The staff is super courteous and professional. The live music...well let's just say it took me back to a ramada on the beach of Mazatlan in 1971. That was a night not to be forgotten.
Anyway, an evening at Los Equipales can be described with one word: Magical. Some restaurants are in the food business. Los Equipales is in the business of making you feel good...good about what you are eating, good about where you are, and especially feeling good and lucky to have such a wonderful dinner partner.
I couldn't help but think of how MaryAnn and I met 8 years ago. How I fell in love with her on our first date...and then spent the next two months hiding that fact so I wouldn't scare her off.
And even this morning she left me a card. "The best thing that ever happened to me is you
," it said. "I'm so glad we found each other.
" And then she told me she loved me.
How does life ever work out this good!?!
Tonight, with Mickey Cruz singing Besa Me Mucho
, and the two of us sipping coffee and leaning back in those wonderful equipal
chairs, we found ourselves a million miles from Nob Hill. And for that hour or so, our little lives seemed as magical as those waves rolling into the gentle night on a beach in Mazatlan.
