Until very recently, I'd been working under the assumption that I was kind of slow when it came to math and mathematical concepts. This was entirely due to negative experiences in high school math classes, some wretched h.s. math teachers, and the voracious pursuit of liberal arts degrees. However, my feelings about math have been changing because of a class I've been taking (at somegye maligned CNM, no less) and I've been trying to engage with mathematical ideas that I find interesting. I just watched this simple and beautiful video that explains the math of mobius transformations. As I've only ever thought of mobius in terms of the strips of paper we twisted and glued in high school geometry, I found this entirely new and interesting. It's also lovely to watch. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JX3VmDgiFnY

hettie, want more math in a very fun way? Check out the Fractal Foundation website and then head over to the Planetarium at the NM Museum of Natural History and Science for First Friday Fractals. Dr. Jonathan Wolfe creates fractal pieces for the planetarium dome that are truly amazing and he explains them in a way even I can somewhat, sorta understand. I work at the museum and every show sells out. You have to buy your tickets online waaaaay in advance.

j and k-- thanks for the dvd recommendation, I'll check it out. I've just finished my second semester of autoCAD and it's a way of interacting with math and geometry that seems to click with my brain. I don't know if I have the patience for calc though!

adelita, thanks for the heads up on buying tickets! I've heard great things about this and I think you've just given me the kick in the butt I sometimes need to actually check it out. I'm going to see if my sweetie and I can work it out to go this friday. maybe we'll see you there....
