It's nice that KOAT is covering bike-related issues, but MAN I wish they and other media would stop feeding the "biking on the streets is dangerous!" meme. The goal of bridges like this is not to get bikes separated from traffic. That is simply not practical or even possible. The goal is to get more cyclists out there riding and provide them with quicker ways to get around the city. The answer to making streets safer for cyclists is to educate motorists and cyclists on how to drive/ride together.

Another correction to the KOAT story: Quinn was not riding in the "bike lane" on old 66. There is no bike lane out there. He was riding in the crappy shoulder that cyclists have to resort to out there.

Also, Kenny, yes, that would be great if people would live and work on the same side of the river; unfortunately, the majority of the jobs are on the east side of the river and the cheap houses are on the west side. Which is why you shouldn't let developers plan your city for you...

Re: Sprawl
'"Atlanta was recognized as the fastest-spreading human settlement, probably in the history of the world," Goldberg said.' That's just stupid. I bet there are dozens of cities in China that are spreading much faster and much dirtier right now. Never mind India.

Re: Attention Whore Richardson
Since New Mexico is the 3rd most dangerous state in the country, maybe his overseas jaunts will help. Um, somehow. christ.

Re: Car Theft
I 100% support the theft of pickup trucks. It's good for the economy. It boosts car sales, and national trends indicate those idiots who drove vanity pickups (i.e., not contractors etc.) are at least somewhat more likely to switch to more efficient autos as replacements. Any 4-wheeled vehicle off the streets is a benefit to me, ridin, and the other motorcycling and bicycling commuters of Albuquerque. High five!

Re: Local IQ
I don't trust them even a little bit after their piece proclaiming Theobroma the best chocolatier in Albuquerque. Dolts. That works if you don't know the definition of "chocolate" and "Albuquerque."

...OK, I think I'm done. Sorry.

How odd, a politician actually talking to another head of state diplomatically. Attention whore or not, more politicians should be doing things like this for the sake of our stained image and record.

Also, the way the population is spread throughout the state is what puts new mexico in "3rd most dangerous state"(gasp!) category. Every city is at about median for their particular size... so please stop building gated "communities" in my community!

Once Banned, It *is* dangerous to ride in Albuquerque. It's also dangerous to be a runner and pedestrian in the city. I'm glad they don't sugar coat it becaue it is true. If you don't know what you are doing on two wheels, you'd better stay off the streets.
