My 12 year old wants to be a Library volunteer this summer. in past tears if you were in the 12-14 age group you just talked to the librarian and off you went. This year the City is requiring background checks.
I know that my kids are fairly sheltered, but my question is- is this paranoia or is it really that bad out there?

I know that there are kids out there who are the same age as mine who are bad news- and as the librarian pointed out if someone is a predator, the library is full of kids, especially in the summer. So I don't think this is totally out to lunch, I guess I am just sad that I have to worry about it and that we don't really don't have public spaces where kids can have some degree of independence.

As a children's librarian friend of mine pointed out, dangerous 12-14 year olds don't tend to volunteer at the library. If they want to predate at the library, all they have to do is go there. I don't think they'd have a lot of luck, though. It's rather public.

Somewhere, there is a book about civilizations collapsing because they end up over-regulating themselves. I can't remember the name of the book, but background checks for 12 year olds could have been in it.
