What's going on, Albuquerque?

just joined Los Poblanos Organics

I remember recently reading that there are no grocery stores downtown, and having just went into the warehouse and joined Los Poblanos Organics I am wondering if people in that area know about them. They will deliver for a small additional charge (it is about $25 a week for excellent quality produce) and you can pre-order organic milk, eggs and meat. No shop-worn vegetables, I am very picky and I was very pleased with the quality. Friends in Placitas say that joining Los Poblanos Organics has changed the way they eat for the better, and cut way down on car usage. One more thing you can do for yourself, the community and the environment. With the odd trip to the co-op it should make urban life more pleasant.

LPO and the Co-Op seem to have different purposes, both of which are worthwhile. Even between the two plus upcoming farmer's markets all our produce needs aren't going to be met, but it's a good start.

Comment by Lauren on April 29, 2008 at 5:23pm: I'm with LPO, too. My grandparents were farmers and I spent my summers on the farm, so I guess I have a thing for farm life. I tried the Coop when I first came to NM and didn't like it. And I don't care if some of my produce is trucked in because I know that it would be just about impossible to have a well rounded diet here in the middle of winter. I have no desire to eat like a just arrived pioneer. Also, Farmer Monte is very responsive...if you send an email about some subject you will get a response. The produce is top quality.

Comment by Lauren on April 29, 2008 at 7:23pm: I have found that the "substitutes" box gives us a lot of variety....we aren't big on citrus, but we sure love chard, cabbage and potatoes and lots of times those are available as substitutes, as well as garlic, carrots, sweet potatoes, etc. We're big on soups and find that we are usually able to get a couple pots of soups from our basket, as well as fruit for our lunchboxes and cereal, plus salad fixings. We print out the produce list that is emailed from Farmer Monte and from that list I plan the soups of the week and use epicurious.com to zero in on recipes that will use up the produce. In the summer we supplement from our own small produce crop and the farmer's markets.

Way better than grocery store veggies. Check out the Victory Garden cookbook for great chard/collards/beets recipies along with the other obscure veggies you may get from LP.

Comment by Mom Of Two on April 30, 2008 at 3:23pm: It's the obscure my family enjoyed. Going online and researching what it was or recipes for it was fun for the kids. My favorite part in the winter was to see how many ingredients from the box I could use to form one meal. LPO is catching on for many and the new locations prove it.
