"The Heat" played our first summer softball game last night under the lights at Bullhead Park. We had a good turn out of women and we looked good in our new uniforms but the other team proved to be the better hitters. We lost 4-28 but had a good time and I was thrilled to see real live score boards on the fields. The field umpire said he didn't like them because they make the games run over the time limit. I thought they were great and made me feel like a professional weekend player. Of course this meant we (and everyone else) were able to see how poorly we performed but I figure we didn't get skunked so it is a better start than the previous seasons and we have lots of room and time to improve. I always enjoy seeing the team get better and better with each game. We don't practice much and really are just a recreational team so it always feels like we are in the wrong league when the other team gets up to bat and smacks the crap out of the ball.

I felt good about my playing, I had one walk, hit a shot down the third baseline and even made a double play while playing second. It helped that the lady who hit couldn't run but you take what you can get sometime and I'm not too proud so I'll take it.

All in all it was a good night but I think we might need to go the batting cages and practice catching fly balls like those ladies smacked. Damn, I wish I could hit like that.

Play Ball!

Hi Psychomom;

I'm umpiring games at Bullhead. I get to control the scoreboard with a remote- pretty cool; they're solar powered scoreboards too. Maybe I'll see you there (and toss you out of a game? - lol).
The game time limit thing seems a bit crazy (or should I say psycho?) to me, like softball on speed; I guess there's no other way for them to get 3 games in per field per night.

Oh no, Donny has the power! I'll try to behave myself because after all it is just a game but I do enjoy chatting up and harassing the umpires. Hope to see you out there some time but try not to laugh too hard at our playing and can I offer you a couple of bucks to add some points to our score? wink, wink

How fun! I can't hit a ball to save my life. Or catch one really either. But reading your post made me feel all pre-summer happy and nostalgic ... and for a second I was really looking forward to my next game! Nice.

You're kind of like me, P-Mom. I scored 12 points in a 60-and-over basketball game a while back and I thought I was hot -- just like you must have felt making your double play against a woman who needed a cane to get to first. In the locker room after the game, where both teams gathered, we were comparing aches and a guy from the opposition told me, "yeah, you know the guy who guarded you -- he had triple bypass surgery two or three weeks ago."

60-and-over! Good for you! I keep thinking I'm getting too old for this stuff but then I see women older than me and they inspire me to keep playing. I also try to get others out there because they don't know how much fun they are missing and laughing at yourself should be considered exercise, I know my sides ache.

Brrrr! It was COLD on the field tonight. We got a reprieve for the later games though; none of the lights worked at Bullhead tonight... It got us in outta the cold, but I hope they fix the lights by tomorrow (when I'll be sure to dress warmer).

It's suppose to be another cold one tonight so dress warm. I'll be watching the Dukes (oops, the Isotopes) play tonight because I just can't get enough baseball but luckily work provided us with sky box (suite) tickets. Today I love my job.
