You may have noticed some One Way signs going up on Lead and Coal--remember, Lead was one way headed west, and Coal was one way headed east?
Well the construction project that has been both a pain in the neck (roads closed, no left turns, noisy construction) and a boon (fewer cars driving through, lower crime, a nice "pedestrian" street) is finishing up.
Lead and Coal will soon go back to their original configuration:
IMPORTANT NOTICE
Beginning the evening of April 4, 2012, SUNDAY APRIL 8, 2012 *** Coal Avenue SE from I-25 to Washington will have one lane open for eastbound traffic so that crews can install the final layer of asphalt to the roadway and re-stripe Coal as a one-way road in its final configuration. Westbound traffic will be re-routed to Lead Avenue SE from I-25 to Washington. One lane of traffic will be open on Lead while construction continues.
This work is expected to last through the end of May.--read more at the Lead Coal website -->
We'll ultimately have two lanes in each direction, PLUS a bike lane to go along with the improved sidewalks, landscaping, and though not as visible, but just as important, improved sewers.
**WEATHER DELAYED
Comment by JeSais on April 2, 2012 at 9:53am it's just as easy for me to remember Lead goes West and Coal goes East :-)
Comment by Mi3ke on April 2, 2012 at 12:25pm And the mountain is in the east.

Comment by Dee Cohen on April 2, 2012 at 12:34pm I had to remind myself by saying, 'Lead leads downtown'...Lead leads downtown..' until it was firmly rooted in my brain. I think!
YES! We've been so looking forward to the end. And Coal/Lead look gorgeous now--what used to be a pretty ugly, depressing corridor is now beautiful and just "feels" better. :) Thanks, as always for the updates!
Comment by Miss Minie on April 2, 2012 at 10:23pm Haha, I always remembered that lead is heavy, so lead goes down(town) :)
Comment by JeSais on April 3, 2012 at 7:48pm UPDATE: the switcheroo is delayed until Sunday night April 8-- rain / snow has delayed the planned paving
Thanks for posting this. I remember what Ben Moffett would say, Coal fires up, Lead melts down.
