What's going on, Albuquerque?

A Dime for your Stories

Duke City DimeStories Open Mic premiered this past February 18... We had over 20 people attend our launch party (which long time locals tell me is "pretty good for Albuquerque").
We had funny, we had drama, we had poignant, and most of all we had a group of terrific writers reading great short stories.

DimeStories, huh?
In case you haven't been to a DimeStories Live Event in San Diego, LA, Orange County Calif. or New York City, DimeStories are open mic events for PROSE. "DimeStories are 3-minutes stories read by the author. Equal parts seductive and tiny, DimeStories are funny. They’re heartwrenching. They’re fictional or factual but, either way, they’re all true."

We'll be hosting these open mic events every third Thursday at 7 pm at The Source, 1111 Carlisle Ave SE (a mile south of Central) (sign up to read at 6:45pm)
If you come,be warned... the host (that's me!) has a timer* and a poetry detector-- no poetry allowed.
We start drawing names at 7pm.
Best of will be posted online.

*3 minutes is about 500 words. Go over the time limit and (1) you'll get the stink eye, (2) you'll be embarassed, and (3) your piece won't be eligible to be "best of" or included in the podcast, or the radio show.....

Comment by JeSais on February 26, 2010 at 9:35am: no courage necessary! just a good sense of time (3 minutes. max!!) and a good story. While we do select the best of to broadcast online, this is not a slam... I got the vibe of it being a nice supportive group of writers. So DO come! honestly, the worst that is going to happen is the buzzer will go off, you'll rush through the last part of your story and then the audience will applause :-)

Comment by Ben Moffett on February 26, 2010 at 10:23am: I like the idea. I'm assuming most of the material is light-hearted. I wonder about the parameters in terms of acceptability. Are we talking Saturday Evening Post, Reader's Digest or at the other extreme Playboy, Penthouse?

I did a piece that was selected for inclusion on the Best of Year 3 CD and it was about my mom who died when I was 13. Not too funny! :-)
