Art Exhibit Displays 50,000 Clay Bones on Fourth Street

50,000 ceramic bones covered downtown Fourth Street between Central and Gold all day Saturday. One Million Bones, an Albuquerque-based non-profit organization, created the temporary exhibit to call attention to worldwide genocide.

The group’s website emphasizes genocide in Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Burma. The Albuquerque event is a precursor to a work of one million clay bones, planned for Washington, DC in 2013.

I watched as dozens of white-garbed activists quietly placed the bones in the street. The patter of clay-on-clay plinks added windchime sounds to the calm process. This lent a powerful sense of respectful dignity to the work of art in progress.

I brought a digital camcorder so I could remember the occasion. You can view the result here.

Thank you so much, Paul, for being a part of this event and for giving us a shout out on your blog! One Million Bones is deeply touched by the magnitude of support for this cause and for the fight against genocide and for human rights! Thank you!!!!
