Boycotting Cinemark/Century and Blake's Lotaburger for support of Prop8

The Cinemark CEO gave approx $10K to support the passage of Prop8. Cinemark owns nearly all the theaters in Albuquerque. I don't care. Until the company recognizes what they have done and corrects it, I will not patronize their theaters. Here is the statement I sent them on their form for contact.

Based on the news that the CEO of Cinemark has donated approximately $10,000 to support the passage of the discriminatory Proposition 8 in California, I have come to the conclusion that my family and I will no longer attend Cinemark-owned theaters in my community, Albuquerque NM. In addition, I am calling for friends and family around the country to identify Cinemark-owned theaters in their area for boycott, if they are as outraged as I am by this attempt to enforce some Americans' personal religious convictions on all people of the State of California. I presume the ultimate goal of this bigotry is to prevent same sex couples in all states affording themselves of the right to marriage that has been found constitutional by the Supreme Court of the US, most notably in Loving v Virginia (1967) and Turner v Safley (1987). This action by your CEO is unacceptable to me and, as such, I will no longer support your company.

To further clarify hannahbee's post (and let me say that I personally avoid the Century Rio for reasons of my own that are tied to a love of independent and foreign film and some nasty booking practices), not all (less than half) of our local movie theaters are owned by Cinemark. The following theaters are Cinemark/Century:

Century Rio
Century Downtown
Cinemark Movies 8
Cinemark Movies West

Local movie theaters that are NOT owned by this chain:

The Guild - locally owned
Four Hills 10 - Regal Entertainment Group
High Ridge 8 - Regal Entertainment Group
SouthWest Film Center / UNM Student Union screening room
Cottonwood Starport 16 - Regal Entertainment Group
Winrock - Regal Entertainment Group

And... speaking of the Starport, later this week I'll be giving away free screening passes to Transporter 3.

Oh, p.s. The owner of Blake's Lotaburger also donated money in support of Prop 8.

Thanks for the info. I will be passing this info out to my friends and family around the country.

There was a successful protest in NY City last night that started at the Mormon Temple. My son said there were about 15,000 people and it was very peaceful. The police actually shut down Broadway when the crowd starting marching to (I think) Lincoln Park. I was glad to hear that it started and ended peaceful as I believe it is important if you want your true message to get across.

Sophie, I just saw that about Blake's. I am sending a modified version of my comment to Brian Rule, all the while crying tears of bitterness because I love Blake's. But no more.

I've been boycotting those theaters for years because they have horrible popcorn. But this is a much better reason.

I am so disgusted i probably gave them the 10,000 dollars that they donated. I love the movies and go to all the theatres that were mentioned all the time. Fortunately I also love Starport but sometimes I am cheap or poor and have to go to the dollar movies I guess that has to stop! Blakes hasn't been the same for a while but damn those breakfast burritos are good.

Blake's too?!

Geez.

Boycotting the movies is no big deal because my wife and I refuse to pay their prices. But Blakes? Ouch. That hurts.

You know, nothing threatens your New Mexico hamburger chain more than same sex couples wanting to wed in California. Think of what Blake's money could have done locally. No more itsaburger combos for me.
