Tax Help New Mexico, which provides free tax preparation services for New Mexicans whose household income in 2011 was less than $50,000 and for those who are age 65 and older, will open at sites across the state on Wednesday, Feb. 1. The service is being provided through a partnership between Central New Mexico Community College and the United Way of Central New Mexico.
Tax Help New Mexico volunteers have passed an IRS certification exam and they’re trained to help taxpayers take advantage of tax credits they’re entitled to, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit.
Last season, Tax Help served more than 22,000 New Mexicans and helped to generate more than $21.7 million in tax refunds. The program also saved taxpayers an estimated $3.7 million in tax preparation fees. Tax Help is being offered at 30 locations statewide.
Some restrictions may apply. Visit cnm.edu/taxhelp for more information, locations, hours and documents that taxpayers will need to bring to the Tax Help sites.
