to my About Me section because it summarizes my experience as a College Counselor while I worked at South Valley Academy. It was galvanizing. It brought me closer to an understanding of myself, my culture and our society, and drove home points that are easy to side glance and never truly address.
The comparative study between my high school experience in the local school system versus what students of the 21st century have to navigate in order to achieve a basic level of education was motivating. South Valley Academy represents the effort to propel forward lives that might otherwise, easily, become part of the shuffle that exists beneath our feet.
The Hispanic Youth Symposium is a non-profit event sponsored by the Hispanic College Fund. Their current grant ensures that this program will come through New Mexico for one more year. Beyond that, however, its reality is uncertain. It would be a great boon for New Mexican students & their families if we took it upon ourselves to ensure that the Hispanic Youth Symposium was assured a place within our summer schedules now and in the future.
