It’s amazing how a few extra-curricular activities outside work and home life can open doors to places you had no idea existed in this great city.
I recently came across two local businesses that I think as Albuquerque lovers we should embrace to help keep these places going.
Lucky for me these establishments tap into two of my passions, running and beer drinking. I like to stay balanced. So, here are my findings this month:
#1
Southwest Sports Institute
I stumbled across this place just in time for the cold, winter months and the holiday season where it becomes tempting to bundle up at home and eat yummy comfort food.
I’ve been running, but I hit a point where I was ready to get more out of my running routine. My standard gym membership wasn’t helping me anymore and as a runner, I know I can’t rely solely on running. I need to supplement it with strength training to prevent injury and to just become better and stronger.
My friend introduced me to the Southwest Sports Institute (SWSI). At first, I thought, “Institute?” That sounds like a place only pro athletes work out at. I’m allowed to go there? Absolutely! Anyone and everyone are welcome.
In talking to owner Adam Halpern, an Angel Fire native who has traveled all over building his resume in all things fitness/athletic training, he opened SWSI to give all New Mexicans a fitness resource and an opportunity to grow as an active community.
Our city
ranks quite high every year in being active. Adam knows this and has opened his facility so we can achieve our fitness goals and improve our overall health.
Want to know more? Check out their web site. Keep in mind it’s a new company so the web site is still in the works. Or you can ask me and I’ll find the answer for you. On Wednesday, December 2 there will be a toy drive event at SWSI from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Bring a toy, check out the facility and talk to the performance specialists. If you bring a toy, you get a free fitness class.
#2
Hallenbrick Brewery
I love beer and I love New Mexico beer. I think this state does pretty well with local breweries and I’m excited that we’ve got another one opening in the city.
I met one of the owners, Jeff Brick, at all places, the
Albuquerque Road Runners Club monthly meeting at
Sport Systems.
He too is a runner and was there to let us know that Hallenbrick will be holding a 5K fun run on Thanksgiving Day. All participants will get a free pint of beer at the end. SOLD!
Jeff is from Chicago and has been here for 10 years. His business partner, Scott Hallen, was a chemical engineer (of course).
Two weeks ago they opened their doors. Check them out and I hope to see some of you at their 5K Turkey Race.
