Gas Blast Empties Eatery

(Why don't you start a feature, Adelita, asking for daily headlines from local and statewide papers, a la Jay Leno.  There are plenty.)

Lovelace is a health insurance provider as well as the owner of several hospitals in the area. That has always struck me as a conflict of interest. Now, they are trying to hold onto the old way of providing medical care (read expensive) and are having a hard time moving forward to new and less expensive ways of providing care. I suspect Lovelace will get left behind if they can't figure out how to move forward.

Agreed, Kenny, based on personal experience.

Kenny:  Do you have some insider information?

Comment by Kenny on October 14, 2012 at 6:10pm

No, no insider info from me. I've been a Lovelace customer for many years but that's not why I posted that comment. It just seems funny to me that an insurance company would also be a medical provider. I know it's common but it still seems funny to me. Kind of like if Monsanto owned all the Smith's and Albertson's.

There's no argument that the health care horizon will be going through some pretty disruptive changes in the next few years. Our current system is extremely inefficient. We're going to be seeing more Nurse Practitioners and fewer Doctors when we go in for routine visits. Some entities are blazing the trail in that direction while others are having difficulty accepting it. I see Lovelace as being reluctant to change because they own all those big expensive hospitals. They don't want to lose all those profits and I can't really blame them for that. However, They'll have to find some way to stay competitive as the healthcare landscape changes.
