So...the UNM Master Development Plan includes "bike and pedestrian trails" and some kind of mass transit...BUT UNM wants to build not one, but two massive parking garages on campus this year. Basically, if you build giant parking garages all over campus, you are telling students and faculty that the best way to get to UNM is to use your car. Not exactly what I'd call progressive...progressive would be increasing SAFE bike parking--like how about a bike garage instead of a car garage? How about removing on-street parking on Redondo Drive, so cyclists don't have to worry about being doored all the time--and don't have to get into the lane of traffic. Or what about making UNM car free? Perish the thought, right?

UNM should invest in student apartments instead - NMSU has them, and they're great - separate bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom, living room - living near campus cuts out the commuting hassle. And the university manages them, so the cost is reasonable, roommates are always available, but it feels like an apartment, not a dorm. UNM should build these instead of more parking garages.
