Sad to hear Charlie's closing.  Best carnitas in town.

Nice to hear a little Howlin' Wolf this morning!

Hasn't the whole 'free newspaper with a fresh voice' and 'in depth reporting' thing been tried before and failed miserably? Frankly I can't remember the last time I held newsprint in my hands. Good luck to him, though. Sounds like a fun way to blow 500 g's

Strange.  I thought that the Charlie of Charlie's had been retired for years.  His son was running the place.  They also sold their liquor license last year.  It's too bad, but I think there is more to the story than just retirement...

I dunno, RLAD - it sounds to me like they want to compete with the Local iQ and the increasingly content-free Alibi as much or more as they want to take on the Journal or the New Mexican. Provided they've got the financial support and can get good events and culture coverage on board, I would imagine there's definitely room for a competitor for that market. Especially if they bring the kind of in-depth reporting associated with free weeklies in other cities (including the Santa Fe Reporter).
