What's going on, Albuquerque?
Oh dear, I shouldn't have read the comments on the Speck story. We went to the lecture last night (though I have not read the actual report) and he's not proposing to take away any parking or driving, just taking away some of the width of the roads (according to him, most of the roads downtown are 15+ feet wide when they only need to be 10 feet) to allow for more parking/bike lanes. What's the downside?
The downside, Krista, is that the car people hear things like "more room for cylists/pedestrian" and they lose their minds. Now, I will say that I appreciate the idea of narrowing the streets to allow for more bike lanes, but the city REALLY, REALLY needs to enforce speed limits if that is what they will do. I have to say that riding up the narrowed MLK with people passing me at 40 mph mere inches from me is not exactly pleasant. Not to mention how thrilling it is to be passed and harassed by people going 30 mph on the Silver Bike Boulevard.
Oh, and I forgot to say Nordstrom Rack!!!! Waaaaahoooooooooo!
His plan proposed to put the parked cars next to the driving cars and the bike lanes next to the sidewalks/pedestrians. The idea is that if downtown is less scary to walk/bike in, more people will do so and local businesses will flourish. He also said that drivers feel that they can go faster on wider streets, thus going well above the 25 mph speed limits in those areas b/c they feel they can. Narrowing, theoretically, would cut down on speeding as well.
From what I could tell, they taped the presentation, so maybe the city will post that somewhere.
Yeah, they said that narrowing MLK would slow people down, too. That most definitely isn't the case.
