While re-reading today's post, I was struck by how many TV show references I used. I count four. How many can you find? P.S. TV shows featuring Ashton Kutcher are not allowed.

Maybe the checkpoint arrests have gone down because people are being smarter about arranging rides home if they've been drinking? I wonder if this is an area where APD doesn't want to seem too successful, because it'll affect funding and overtime for officers working the checkpoints. The article cites a higher number of alcohol related deaths statewide for 2012, but are those numbers actually higher within city limits or just the state as a whole? If they're lower within city limits, it seems the checkpoints and other measures are having an effect and the "social media" accusation is bogus.

Given that social media has toppled a couple of governments and mobilized untold numbers of flash mobs; I would say that it is all within the realm of possibility that it could be used to notify other drunks about checkpoints.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen, just that APD doesn't acknowledge anywhere in the article that maybe the arrest numbers are going down because of the aggressive DWI campaigns that are being waged on multiple fronts in our state. You'd think they'd want to give those measures some credit.

Yes, RunLikeADog, everyone knows the awesome organizing power of "drunks."

Never underestimate the potential of people that are out to have a good time. Drunks can be incredible organizers as witnessed by the invention of beer-pong and sping break in general.
