What's going on, Albuquerque?
I like all the people offering advice to the Guardian journalist to go to places that are wildly off of her itinerary. Yeah, totally take a "side" trip to Taos. It's only 3 hours out of your way. Hello... I feel sorry for her that she picked the absolutely least interesting portion of NM to drive through. Nothing much to see out there but starving cattle. Ick.
I don't know, I kind of like that someone from the UK is doing the back side of NM instead of the typical commercially tourist stuff. Coming in through Roswell and Carlsbad? Of course they should hit White Sands and if possible do the Trinity site cause, it's history ya know. Here's a loaded question for the Fix: Where should they go for a good green chile cheeseburger? I have my favorites, but how 'bout you guys??
On that route? The Outpost, Carrizozo or the Owl, San Antonio. I believe there's a good place in Tularosa too.
I love the Owl and have very good memories there, but it seems to have fallen out of favor in this little corner of the web. I'm sure it's gotten better in the 20yrs since I've been there, but I couldn't in good conscience ever send anyone I didn't dislike to Carrizozo; some very bad memories there. hehehe
I did notice that they've allotted all of 4 whole days for a event-filled trip from Austin, though SA (bleah) out west through the ass-end of Texas and up into NM to Albuquerque. I get the feeling that being from the UK they don't quite grasp the distances here. I've noticed that is pretty common with European folks. They are use to a very compressed world (let's go to France for lunch!) and kind of falter when faced with the dual realities of looooooong distances between population centers and no efficient and reliable rail travel. Wish I could get a chance to cruise 66 in a classic Tbird though...
