What's going on, Albuquerque?
I continue to find it very odd that the Greenfield, Indiana newspaper is running wire stories about Albuquerque.
The city has been studying Bus Rapid Transit for a year and a half, and the ABQ Ride PIO doesn't bother to mention that to KRQE, or even inform them that the bus has a name other than a "train-like bus?"
Not sure whether to lay more blame with the city or the news here.
I dunno. That "train-like bus" looks just like a bus to me. But as long as we are talking mass transit and the city supposedly moving ahead, has anyone seen what they are planning to do to cyclists at the new PdN interchange? Pretty much a joke--and very, very depressing. They had a chance to make it bicycle and ped friendly and just basically thumbed their noses at any plans that did just that.
And I find it very odd that the Zoning Board would want to protect the residents on the north side of Central from an evil brew pub, while ignoring the effects of a really big brew pub (Kelly's, straight across) on the residents who live one block away on the south side. (Hint to Kelly's - improve your swill and prices....) Good on Debbie O'Malley for questioning why the county is collecting $90M/yr for UNMH when the ACA is picking up some of the tab now. Every resident chips in 20% of their property tax so that the un-insured can be treated at the emergency room of UNMH. And they want to build a big hospital instead of a bunch of neighborhood clinics. (We all get to help businesses like builders and Walmart avoid paying for health insurance.)
OBTS - come to a Transit Board meeting (second Thursday of every month, 11:45 am) and complain (Or sign on the Transit page here and express yourself - and mention that you did that. I'll bring it up...)
Also, talk to the mayor here, if you want to give your opinion on the police shooting(s).

Actually, Shotsie, UNM is in the process of acquiring, building, and/or renovating several satellite clinics around town to provide greater access to residents and to reduce the traffic demand in the UNM/CNM/Sunport corridor.
If there wasn't the prospect of an 80% Federal subsidy I doubt there would be any discussion of BRT. Before this becomes fait acompli, the City needs to tell us how they will pay the operating costs. If it is true BRT, drivers don't collect fares, where is the money coming from to pay conductors, fare inspectors, whatever you call them. Also, if drivers are separated from passengers (think train/subway like) we're going to need more transit cops.

Well, sure. That's what USDOT is for: funding transportation projects. 81% of the federal highway trust fund goes to the Federal Highway Authority, but 17% goes to the Federal Transit Authority to fund public transit projects.

BRT systems that adopt this model still collect fares, but they do it at automated kiosks at each transit stop, or via an automated vending machine onboard the bus. You put your money in and get your ticket, then walk onto the bus. This of course necessitates random on-bus enforcement and heavy fines for freeloaders, but if the fines are steep enough the "honor system" works pretty well; this method is in place all over the world.
I'm not a huge proponent of the BRT myself. As far as I'm concerned, the Rapid Ride program - which is a BRT light, really - has been tremendously successful, and I'm not sure the gains from shifting to full-on BRT on Central will be enough to justify the project.
Mid-Region Council of Governments, as part of their UNM/CNM/Sunport study, is looking at putting a BRT line on University, running from the airport all the way up to Menaul. This north-south route will connect some major activity centers and provide a TON of connectivity in the network that does not currently exist. I have much greater faith in the way this will shape our city than I do in the Central study.
