I was on the verge of being amused by Schrader's letter pretty much the whole way through, until he equated guns with cell phones and boxing with rape.

Really, Mr. Schrader? To want to have a cell phone is the same thing as wanting to have a gun? Really? Really? Are you sure?

And are you really, really sure you want to equate boxing with rape? Honestly?
I have a cousin who is a boxer. My cousin is an honorable young man, not a rapist.
I read that paragraph and on behalf of my cousin took great, great offense.

I know a lot of people love this guy, but not me. My view and opinion is that he came off as arrogant in his letter. As long as he is going to tell me that my owning a cell phone equates to gun ownership, as long as he is going to make the case that my cousin, a good young man, is no better than a RAPIST because he's a boxer, I will not being hailing "the Don".

Shame on "the Don".

Right there with you Rich. I have never been a fan of the Don. I think he often arrogant and nutty . I understand his value as an ABQ icon, but not on my list of fave people.

I stopped reading Don's letters after the 1st few I read. No need to keep reading them, since they say the same thing every time.

Now where do I get my nuclear bomb?

He didn't equate them. He stated things that he felt were obscene. Justice Potter Stewart aside, obscenity is in the eye of the beholder. I, too, find rape obscene, but I also find driving obscenely oversized vehicles on roadways obscene. That doesn't mean I equate driving a big truck to raping someone. I dislike both, but not on the same level.

@ Benny:

Yes, he did equate them. Here is the quote for you:

"War, paying taxes for war, rape, racism, revenge, greed, boxing, grudges … are obscene!"

Now, let me retype it, showing where the equating takes place:

"War, paying taxes for war, rape, racism, revenge, greed, boxing, grudges … are obscene!"

I understand that you like the guy, Benny, but, really, I know I'm not the only one who finds Schrader's arrogance offensive.

Yeah...Don's been pretty much saying the same thing in the Lobo and the Alibi for years.

1. Nakedness is okay
2. Everything about our capitalist system is bad...very, very bad and I live on some ridiculously low amount per day
3. Hot, Homosexual sex is Hot.
4. Eat more nuts

Nevertheless, I've met Don several times and find him quite easy to talk to. He's pretty hard on himself and writes the same stuff but socially he's pretty affable.

Don, you left out a couple of the Don's other continual themes:

5. Drinking your own urine is healthy
6. Extreme suntanning without sunscreen prevents cancer and other health problems
7. Sex with underaged boys (and by implication, girls) is a good and natural thing.

Don is amusing and his intentions are usually good but his reasoning is generally unsound. He does, after all, advocate that everyone lives the lifestyle that he does without for a moment considering that he gets the (admittedly small) amount of money that he lives on from a publicly funded university. How many nude male models does Don think the Albuquerque economy can support?

I agree that Don comes across as a nice guy when you meet him, as I have on several occasions. That said, he's pretty much a wackjob.
