The story was written in a serious fashion, but in print form it came with a humorous graphic and the little bit at the end where it says "See ___ on page 3" led you nowhere, so I'm pretty sure it was a joke.

Comment by Jackson on April 6, 2011 at 4:09pm: I'm looking at the article in the Friday issue right now and I don't see the humorous graphic at all, just a chart with the ratios of students to advisors in different colleges. And the page jump, does seem to have a typo, but does continue on page 3.

So I don't think it's a joke.

In any case, way back when I was teaching undergrads at UNM, I had some interesting experiences with athletes and their support staff. Most of the student athletes were great, but no matter where I taught, I've never been comfortable with coaches (once even an AD) coming to my office to talk about the student's progress in my class. I used FERPA as a stalling technique, in case anyone is interested...

Comment by Gloria M on April 7, 2011 at 4:39pm: Umm, based on my prior knowledge of the advisement system, most of it is legit; student athletes have separate advisors, they have separate tutors...they have their own student success center on the second floor of the "new" Student Support and Services Center.
