Having owned and operated two storefront businesses in the Albuquerque area, I can empathize with the owner of the Kickstand especially the part where people come into the store, inspect an item then go and purchase it online. No matter how much value I tried to add to being a locally owned shop, people more often than not opted for cheaper prices online.

The Sears Outlet is simply the latest entry into Albuquerque's swing to down market retail (Conn's, Gordmans).  The bigger story are recent projections on the future of malls in general and Sears in particular, said to looking at closing many stores.

It is a pity that Kickstand is closing and it is a pity that people take up a store owners' time and resources shopping for something and then go find it online for less.  It's a disease we suffer from in this country:  the bottom line is saving money--no matter the long term cost.

I agree about the bike shop and people who kick the tires, try out sizes, and then buy on-line.  However, since tune-ups and maintenance are a pretty big issue with bicycles maybe it is not as big a problem as it would be for, say, a camera store.

Anyway, another aspect for bike shops is that they tend to do well during periods of shifts in the popularity of different kinds of bicycles...like when mountain bikes first came out, then the shift back to road bikes and racing, then fixies, now maybe urban bikes and electrically aided bikes.  Also, under 50cc scooters are probably taking their toll.  And don't forget big box stores like REI and TREK.  It's a tough business with lots of changes in fashion.  The only thing the seems to remain is good quality service...and that doesn't pay too well.
