My Dad and I ran an auto-shop when I was in HS and College; he bought a waste oil heater thinking he'd be able to shave a bit off our heating bills and safely get rid of the oil and trans fluids we recovered servicing cars (yes, the heater was rated for both types of fluids and used a catalytic converter more efficient than the cars at the time).  Instead of just saving some money on heating we ended up never using our natural gas heaters.  The units were efficient enough that we didn't burn through all our waste oil during normal business hours so we'd turn down the blowers and run it over night to keep the shop warm during even pretty bitter cold. We even tapped the output to use to heat our solvent baths for cleaning parts.  I'm sure the systems now are better designed and more efficient as well as (hopefully) cleaner; I wouldn't hesitate to use one again.
