•    Bernalillo County Fire Dept. equips rescue unit with an extra-large gurney and a winch.

    •    1500 line up for 200 jobs at new Target.  Remember, two days ago 200 high-tech jobs at HP left for Georgia.

    •    Crime in Rio Rancho is up.  Channel 7 notes RR has a "small police force."  Well, the solution is obvious; hire bigger officers.

    •    A cold cold storm with 55 mph winds to slam ABQ today.  Light rain or snow also possible.  Overnight temps drop all week.  Seek shelter.  Drip those faucets.

    •    A suspicious device, resembling something named after a former Soviet Union official and meant to be thrown at tanks, was found near an ABQ dumpster.  Turned out to be fireworks item.

    •    Flu hits Duke City hard. Protect your family--get shots.

    •    Rio Rancho fireman is charged with getting his truck fixed with charity funds.  Police used the digital encoding (the picture date) on his camera to catch the guy.  Those RR police may be small, but they're smart!

    •    Teenager charged with throwing a brick at sheriff's officer and then biting the hand of the police who arrested him.

Definitely got a *snurk* out of me.  Other obvious solution:  Hire AXE COP (written by a five year old and drawn by his 30-year-old brother)!

“It allows less personnel to accommodate a patient, therefore it gives a little more dignity,” Deputy Chief Frank Barka said.

A little more dignity than a pallet and a forklift.

Regarding the flu: for goodness sakes, cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze! So many people ignore this common courtesy. Also wash hands at every opportunity and encourage kids to do the same. I'd love to see more workplaces with little bottles of hand sanitizer lying around. People who don't wash their hands regularly are gross. People who don't wash their hands regularly during flu season are also potentially dangerous. Ew.

I'm always surprised when articles about epidemics like this don't include a reminder that there are really basic things we can do beyond vaccination to help keep ourselves and each other healthier.

The high capacity gurney story is a good example of how Obesity and the more comprehensive metabolic syndrome epidemic in this country ripples through all aspects of our culture. The money to pay for that gurney which is needed to lift someone who weighs more than 350 lbs. A standard transport gurney use to cost about $2k. These 3/4 ton transport gurneys cost well over $7k if memory serves correct from research a couple of years ago. We as a Nation really need to get the population healthy. Until then, we will continue to spiral into high healthcare cost and taxes.
