Slamwag, I've been here since the mid 90's and I've seen a lot of public "seed" money but very little follow-up by private capital. The downtown BID is financed by a property tax surcharge, but most of the high dollar downtown development is off the tax rolls for one reason or another. Only a few sites are providing most of the BID money which is why it is underfunded. The Anasazi is only the latest in a string of exploitation of downtown by grifters and carpetbaggers. There have been many good ideas for downtown that could have resulted in a family friendly community gathering place. Example, creation of public performance/exhibition spaces for local artists. Still waiting for that one. The fact that escort services is one of the top SIC classifications for downtown businesses says it all.

@ ramon t - if it pretties up an otherwise ugly building than yes! geesh, someone should paint a rainbow on you!

"Pretty" is subjective. If someone painted your house Plaid and puke green one night and called it art, would you not worry about the thousands of dollars involved in the clean-up?

abqmon - I am all for pretty. But, only if the owner of the building agrees with the project. This is clearly vandalism and trespassing. And now you support assault?

To the Rainbow Graffitti artist(s) - message me! You can put a rainbow on my house anytime!

Recently it was reported that the City opted to hire local, "lesser known" musicians for Summerfest and some other local events. Since we clearly have local visual artists who are willing to work for free, maybe the City should consider taking the same approach to its public art program.

@abqmon - You wrote "someone should paint a rainbow on you!". That would imply that someone would have to throw paint on me or restrain me and paint a rainbow. That is assault.

@OBTS - Read above.
