Driving really sucks: 4 teenagers killed in Santa Fe by some drunk driver heading the wrong way this weekend. I wonder how many prior DWIs the drunk driver had.....

Shotsie: please be advised that the wrong-way driver is only PRESUMED to have consumed alcohol--this based on a sheriff's deputy's observation that he smelled alcohol and the driver had bloodshot eyes. There has been no official determination that the man who was going the wrong way was drunk, but the media sure is saying that he was. That's really bad. Yes, it's a tragedy that the teens were killed, but let's wait until we have the full story before we jump to conclusions, shall we? Maybe you'll notice the story RIGHT UNDER the story on this weekend's accident where Albq. police arrested a mentally disabled man because they presumed he was under the influence of something and he really wasn't.

Anyone else having trouble figuring out the right twitter username for the city of Albuquerque's 311? The website is not so clear. There's CABQ (I figure that is the general city account since the annoying Q is the profile pix) and there's cabq311 with a generic profile pix. The CABQ stream seems to be responding to 311 inquiries, though?

Hmm. Maybe I'll just tweet my inquiry. :)

Unrelated 311 action:

I reported a running water fountain @ Robinson Park on Saturday... they had a guy there within 15min to address the issue. I'm pretty impressed with my first 311 call. :)

OBTS:
Actually, I was surprised to see that the Morning Fixer had chosen to link to a hah, hah type of drunk driving story, when a real tragedy occured this weekend involving a presumed, but not necessarily drunk, driver. The article linked was, in my opinion, in bad taste due to the weekend's events.

BTW, the driver was charged with four counts of vehicular homicide, so he'll get his chance in court. (And he's not cooperating - the police had to get a warrant to get his blood sampled for alcohol.)

Completely unrelated to any actual discussion:

Spring, thanks for putting "target=_blank" into your hrefs. I wish more people would do that on the Fix (in fact, I wish it were built into the Ning software). Nice not to lose your page on DCF while following someone's link.

@Benny I think it is now automatic. I just built a test blog with links and also a test link and it automatically added " target="_blank" to the code. Cool.

Well, shotsie, maybe you'll get your chance to stone the wrong-way driver in Santa Fe on the city plaza, but I am just pointing out that the paper (and television media) have implied this man was drunk when the evidence AS NOW KNOWN does not prove that he was, indeed drunk. As in over .08. There are many reasons for a person to cross the center line--the only explanation possible is not drunkenness. As for him not cooperating with police serving as proof certain that he was drunk, well, I just don't know what to say about that, except that I hope you are never arrested nor have need of due process in your life.

As a by the way, the driver of the teen-filled vehicle wasn't even supposed to a)be out driving at that time of night and b)have that many people in the car with her. No, that doesn't mean she deserved to be run into by a wrong-way driver and her friends all killed, no, not at all. But if she'd been following the law...

Sophie: When I wrote my original response to the article, I was hoping that some DCF'er would express some condolence or anger about the terrible tragedy in far-away Santa Fe. Instead, I got scolded for not using the term "presumed drunk", for bringing up a tragedy that happened in Santa Fe, not ABQ, and for thinking that a blog post that's titled: "Driving Sucks: The Fourth DWI is the Charm Edition" sounded pretty flippant considering what just occurred.
My apologies to Spring - I know that trying to read and distill articles early in the morning (and come up with a witty tie-in) is pretty hard to do and I'm sure she'll do a fine job for the rest of the week. (And I will disappear for a while.....)

The increase in amount of NUCLEAR WEAPONS involvement at the base makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. I just hope I'm not going to be glowing, or lose great amounts of hair anytime soon.
