On the whole, the story is sordid and dismaying. But you have to love this headline...(the article is subscription-only, but check the URL title...)

I guess if you're a victim of sexual assualt in prison you deserved it because, after all, you're in prison.

However, I find Wiener's protestations to be hollow. Come ON. He didn't realize this "joke" was racist? Really? At least he had to realize it was in poor taste--oh, wait, he didn't realize that, either--until the e-mail was publicized. Is Wiener really trying to say that prison sex is consensual? Wow. I think the appropriate thing, then, is for Mr. Wiener to spend a week over at MDC and he can investigate the situation for himself. People should really be asking themselves whether they want someone like this overseeing the jail.

But it looks like they've now removed even their lame one-time "trial" viewing option, leaving all online content accessible only to people who already get a physical copy of the paper. Now that's useful...post changed to reflect the (apparent) new policy.

i have nothing to add to the wiener story, other than i think he should resign because he obviously thinks the electorate are fools. i'm not holding my breath for him to be honorable.
