What's going on, Albuquerque?
Well, I don't know. What IS a likely location for live theatre? The Vortex' spot across from UNM might have been close to Popejoy and Rodey, for whatever advantage that might confer, but there was no parking and was pretty manky. The Langell's spot will have plenty of parking, be easy to get to for people from all parts of town and has the advantage of not being an old, crappy building.
Re: APD and their penchant for killing mentally ill folk, I wish they'd just publish their time limit on just how long they'll talk to the mentally ill person waving a "knife" (or other imagined object). Is it an hour? Two hours? That way the mentally ill are at least on notice. And you're telling me that 30 police officers wouldn't be able to fight off one man with a "knife?" Really? It's a disgrace.
I agree OBTS. The old Langell's building is a good location for the Vortex theater. It is centrally located and I think it's nice to have cultural venues outside of the UNM/downtown areas.
Exactly, OBTS. What's really disturbing about the police shootings involving un- or lightly-armed distraught or mentally ill people - and the eyewitness account in this morning's Journal lays this one out in a lot more detail - is that things usually start from some sort of standoff, with officers in good cover and in no danger. And then the police do something that forces some kind of confrontation culminating in fatal gunfire. Why? What precipitates this? Do the cops just get tired of waiting around? Certainly in this situation or the many others like it there's been no evidence of an attempt to bring in mental health personnel, police negotiators, or anyone else with training and skill to help talk people down. Why not? Is it just too much trouble? If that's the thought process then our police department is profoundly sick and it's time for real housecleaning, not just cosmetic changes at the top.
Phil - They did call a Crisis Intervention Team as well as the State police at the request of the man that was shot.
Ramon - so what happened? Why did they send in the dogs, and then open fire? You'd think a department under this kind of scrutiny would avoid provoking a situation under any circumstance unless lives were at stake. Clearly that wasn't the case with this guy, who was surrounded by police in a remote area where he was only a danger to himself. It really seems like someone just got tired of waiting.
Ramon is right, according to news reports, the CIT was called in. However no one seems to be able to explain what the CIT did to assist in the situation or defuse the situation. We have a BIG problem with APD--they are right now likely trying to figure out the dead guy's history so they can come out and have a press conference in which they talk about the decedent's extensive criminal history, blah, blah, blah. APD, rather than trying to figure out a way to stop killing mentally ill people, seems to be trying to figure out better ways to explain WHY they have to kill mentally ill people. Incidentally, that one of the facts in the Kenneth Ellis case was that the officer who killed him said "we don't have time for this" right before he pulled the trigger. This is NOT the standard for police work or you'd hear of every other department in the US killing mentally ill people having a crisis of some sort.
Don't EVEN get me started on what they did to Judge Murdoch, either. Another shameful, shameful episode in APD's history. We need brand new leadership, that is all. I just wish the Justice Department would take over APD.
Also, hettie, yes, you're right--the Langell's location is far from other attractions. However, Whataburger does serve a mean burger. And there's a couple of Chinese restaurants not too far away--and Der Wienerschnitzel!
Jennifer James 101 is 1.1 miles from the Langell's location.
