Pornotopia is censored again?! Really? Seriously?

The City of Albuquerque's highly restrictive zoning regulations have effectively banned the festival from all potential venues and censored all new erotic speech from our city.

In protest over Albuquerque's blatant attempts to censor films protected by the 1st Amendment, are announcing Pornotopia - CENSORED, Cirque de Sex, a live celebration of eroticism, sensuality and the joys of free speech. Cirque de Sex will feature September Smith, Cookie Fortune, Saywut, Gender Offenders, Burlesque Noir and many other circus, drag and burlesque stars of the Southwest. Cirque de Sex will be held November 6 at 8 pm at the Sunshine Theater, 120 Central Ave SW in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Doors open at 7 pm. General Admission is $10-$20 sliding scale.

Pornotopia has not been canceled. We are not giving up on finding a home for Pornotopia 2010 and a home for free speech. We will not let these erotic films be censored.

I'm actually sorry to hear that this is going on in Albuquerque. There's already enough vulgarity in our world masquerading as "fun," or "comedy." Just because you have every right doesn't mean it adds to the quality of life in the Duke City.

Thanks for the comment, Michael. The films at Pornotopia are more beautiful representation of sexuality and sensuality than films in mainstream, typical porn and much more realistic than mainstream Hollywood. The point of the festival is to highlight better films and show there's progress.

I've always been proud of our open and progressive city. This saddens me. What happened to live and let live? We need new leaders...

I hope so. The list of "feature" performers or guests or whatever doesn't really lead the casual reader to make that conclusion.... I'm a liberal progressive and artist myself, so wouldn't dream of limiting freedom of speech. But like all freedoms, it comes with responsibility. And one of the responsibilities all of us share is quality of life, and concomitant restraint as necessary.

I would venture that sex - healthy, happy, fulfilling sex, that is - is a component of "quality of life" for many if not most consenting adults of legal age. Pornotopia is a celebration of that: fun and happy and open. It's a shame that our city leaders see fit to lump it in with the adult bookstores and creepy all-night theaters of a (hopefully) vanishing era...

Why that's mighty white of you, Michael J. So now we only allow free speech to those with opinions we support? Is that what you call "Liberal" or "Progressive?" Cause from where I'm standing it resembles bigotry masquerading as morality. But hey, I'm sure the Tea Party supports you!

Dave: Please note that while it's fine to attack ideas, attacking people is not okay. See our moderation policy or shoot me an email if you have questions.

my sweetie and I volunteered at pornotopia last year. the most interesting-and best-part was seeing all the folks who bought tickets and supported the event. it shouldn't have been surprising how many different kinds of people showed up, but it was. it was also heartening. thoughtful grown-ups abound in this city! I hope this year's show is allowed to go on.

The censorship bloody shirt gets waved around fairly regularly by the Self Serve bunch. Sometimes you wonder if it is not central to their marketing.

This blog is censored, they label it "moderation". Does a city not have the right to moderate commercial speech in the same manner?

RIP Bob Guccione.

I guess I see this as a land use issue, not a free speech issue. The same land use controls that prevent this event from taking place at the Guild also prevent other uses that people might not be so psyched about and regulate building height, street trees, signage and such.
The zoning on the Guild and Self Serve comes from the Nob Hill Highland Sector Development Plan. The zones are basically and mix of high density residential(R-3) and medium level commercial(C-2). The zoning code lists and defines adult uses, adult material and adults stores

My reading of the code is that adult uses are allowed in the C-3 and IP( industrial park zone) zones.

The Guild does not have the zoning for the use you want.
If I wanted a drive up window, bar, or auto repair shop without the proper zoning I would not be allowed to have it.
If I am missing something here, let me know.
