Oh my...what a typo in this morning's Sunday Journal article, "Well-Worn Success" by David Steinberg in the BOOKS section.

Funny, I always thought it was Bird Song Books although Bird Dong does have a ring to it...Ouch.

Bird Dong ... is that a compliment or an insult?
Comment by Jeff Hartzer on June 28, 2009 at 5:11pm
The direct quote goes like this..."Morwyn Mullins, Bird Dong's co-owner, feels as strongly as Lane does about the enjoyment of operating a used book business" [sic: hyphen needed here?].

A friend of ours writes: "They were offering free dog grooming if you would adopt a dog at Neiman Marcus in Dallas many many years ago. It was a publicity stunt but it was raising money for the anti-cruelty-to-animals folks. So they had a lovely aren't-we-generous full page ad for it, and everybody in the advertising department checked the copy and layout several times but nobody really looked at that very big headline that said "We'll clip your doodle free" until the paper came out that morning.

man- the Journal's had a bunch of typos lately. I read the morning paper as a ritual- and lately, I've been seeing 3-4 typos per edition, at least, which seems like a spike to me.

That's what happens when you have to rearrange the letters to accommodate the speed of typists on old-fashioned typewriters, placing the "d" key next to the "s" key and then stick with the outmoded arrangement on computer keyboards. Does spell check catch that particular typo? I'll have to open up my word processor and try it out...

Spell check might not catch it, but someone should have.

This particular typo is pretty damn near to being an INSTANT CLASSIC.
Comment by Debra Landau on June 29, 2009 at 6:52pm
Spell check wouldn't catch it as "dong" is the sound a bell makes as well as the currency of Vietnam and, uh, something to do with a rooster, I think. My most recent surprise on spell check was the word "megaphoning."

So...is MEGAphoning an actual w-o-r-d?.
Comment by Debra Landau on June 29, 2009 at 7:06pm
Yup, that was the surprise. Oddly enough, there is inconsistency regarding whether or not "spell check" is also "spellcheck." My spellcheck says, "Yes!" But my dictionary says, "Are you &*$%ing kidding me." My dictionary is so rude.
