Duke City Fix

Life, food, events, and community in Albuquerque, NM

Since so many smart and community-minded individuals read Duke City Fix (have I captured your attention yet, with flattery?) I’d like to invite your participation in a community survey. We’re conducting a study related to Kirtland Air Force Base and are surveying the community on issues related to the base and the surrounding areas. Take the survey.

Anyone is welcome to take the survey, but we are especially interested in hearing from those who have interest in Kirtland Air Force Base. This includes individuals who work on the base or at related defense industries; those who live in the neighborhoods or county or tribal lands near the base; business owners near the base; and those who interact with the base in any capacity.

The survey is completely anonymous and takes about 10 minutes to complete. It utilizes online survey software called Survey Monkey. Questions address where you work and live, the type of transportation you use for your commute, and how you rate a number of matters associated with both Kirtland Air Force Base and the Albuquerque International Sunport (traffic, safety, sounds, water, etc.) Questions also address other community issues around the base, including schools, parks, homes, and business.

Why the Survey?

The Mid-Region Council of Governments (MRCOG) is a governmental entity that does regional planning for New Mexico’s central region. (Read more about us here.) This study, the Kirtland Joint Land Use Study, will provide policy recommendations to promote land use and transportation solutions that are mutually compatible to both Kirtland AFB, and the surrounding community. Funding for the study came from a federal grant, which was used to hire a local firm to conduct the study. MRCOG was chosen for the grant funding as a neutral party, and as an organization that already works with the various stakeholders, municipalities, and county governments around the base.

By 2021, the greater Albuquerque-area population is expected to reach 1 million. Therefore, with a growing population, it is important that proactive discussion occurs to minimize future conflict between the base, business, and homeowners.

You can read more about the study here.

Again, the survey only takes about 10 minutes, so if you care about the area in and around the base, please feel free to be part of the public process. Take the survey.
