Take the RailRunner to White Sands?

I stumbled across this story from some online publication called Examiner.com and was shocked by how much ignorance is contained in one short post about the Duke City and New Mexico.

Wow. Gotta love those Texans.

Area 51... not in New Mexico.

Well, he says over and over again it's like another world. Maybe in his world trains don't need rails to take you to magical places.

I like the part where he's referring to the drive between ABQ & Santa Fe and goes on about long stretches between cities with no gas stations. Um. . .one, there are gas stations, and two, I didn't even have to fill up round-trip this weekend.

I noticed the "Examiner" line of mysterious city-branded web sites a while back. Albuquerque has one of its own. They're operated by the Foundation for a Better Life, which is bankrolled by industrialist and conservative christian Phillip Anschutz. Anschutz's film company is currently involved in a film version of Atlas Shrugged. Which probably goes some distance toward explaining The Examiner's weird content.

The Examiner pays its writers, if it all, based on the number of hits a post gets. Maybe this story was a ploy by the writer to get more hits?

Ditto Kelly--I looked at a job posting for them on one of the journalism boards, just out of curiosity because, well, I live here and have worked as a journalist for a few decades and had never heard of them. Any organization that pays its writers by the post is searching for quantity not quality.

They're making a movie of Atlas Shrugged? (Pause for barfing) -- why won't Ayn Rand go away? The Simpsons did the best send-up of her -- The Ayn Rand School for Tots. "What is a baby saying when it's reaching for a bottle? I am a leech!"

Anyway - thanks for all the responses on my post! I left a long comment on the original article, which some of you may have seen. BTW -- please don't diss Texans as a whole just bc of this one idiot. I lived in Texas for five years and have many good, intelligent, progressive friends there. Don't write off 25 million people just because you have certain stereotypes of them. Plus, they make damn fine music.

That writer writes at about a 5th grade level.

Wow, that was just so, so, so awful.

Well, I'll cut the girl a little slack but not much - particularly given the wealth of accurate info that's only a google away, including Abq's own itsatrip.org. I have, after all, talked to people who assumed Phoenix is like right next to Albuquerque...and that Spanish is the primary language. Even the New York Times "lost" us one time, showing Texas smack up next to Arizona.

And - didn't they film those Area 51 scenes in the last Indie movie in NM? Maybe that's the confusion...;-)
