The Sunday Poem: Hakim Bellamy . . . Muslim Woman

"I am in Turkey, and I have been writing a poem a day since I've been here . . . I have been learning so much about culture . . . and I am processing things in my usual way, through poem." Hakim Bellamy

Muslim Woman

The volcanoes
in her eyes
haven’t erupted in years.
Black as ash,
she is still smoking
as I stare into
her mouth.
She is cheek-to-cheek,
teeth that put the mystery
of her voice
behind bars.
Goddess playing waitress,
as our deities often do.
Pretending she belongs to me,
as my God often does.
She gave me her name
when I asked.
And I memorized it
like a scripture.
She gave me her hand
when I asked,
to see if our palms
were compatible enough
to make miracles
when pressed together.
Her hair
laid down her back
like a prayer mat.
Same color as her dormant eyes,
I bowed
at the altar of her.
Wondering what kind of sacrifice
would get her
to sleep with me,
to scream her name,
five times a day.
To ask for forgiveness,
five times a day,
until I make her my wife
and ascend
to heaven

Thank you so much Mr. Mango and Mr. Goodell for sharing some of my trip to Turkey in verse. Honored to be the Sunday poem. Here is the audio of me reading the poem as well!

I think you are on your way to becoming the poet laureate of Turkey, Hakim

Dang Hakim, did you get to hop on a plane and fly home with you?  I'm in Berlin in the Turkish neighborhood of Kreutzberg-Frierichtshain (sp)--the people are so mellow--even the cops are mellow.  down on the corner a protest has been going on for two years.  On weekend nights the cops hangout with the beer drinking bongo thumping protestors who are demanding good treatment for Afrikan refugees.  Berlin has a soul so overflowing with wanting to know better how to be better  it is tangible.  the Turkish women, Muslim women, so often lovely in their pretty fabric scarves (hijab?)  I forget where I am sometimes and had tremors of fear when alone at night, but then remember I am in a special place with social programs designed to help/serve/maintain a healthy population--I know I'm simplifying, as Merkle is rumored to be selling out to corporate interests with very bad intentions--oh woe--but in the meantime--perhaps the German people can stop the sellout of the sanity in this country.  You ought to see the wind farms and solar farms, all nestled into the prettiest farmland in the world--We swam in the Östsee and the beach was so amazing.  there are no dressing rooms.  People modestly or not, change right on the golden sand into swim suits.  That was a trip!  in a rented BMW on th autobahn--whoa --your hot cha-mama love poem is very mysterious  . . . thx for sharing
