The Sunday Poem: Kenneth P. Gurney... On the Seventh Day

How could God, with His busy schedule, find time to rest on the seventh day?  Maybe in a less populated world He didn't have as much to think about.

Kenneth P. Gurney lives in Albuquerque with his beloved Dianne.  For Kenneth's full bio, publication notes and available books please visit http://www.kpgurney.me/Poet/Welcome.html

On the Seventh Day

But God did not have
a second mortgage,
five children who outgrew their clothes every other month
a pink slip spouse
the rising cost of groceries
the electric company threatening to cut him off—
the gas company waiting until Spring—
an orange level terrorist alert
the third highest murder rate in the country
a new neighbor who introduced himself as a child molester
the pot-heads living on the second floor
the meth lab down the block
the boss hinting for blow jobs to maintain employment
the food stamps cut back of a state in debt
the low nutrition value of a high carb diet
an addiction to Colbert’s eleven p.m. showing
an addiction to dark chocolate
stress amped hormones screaming to get laid
lost library books
the sleep lost to children’s hungry nightmare screams
the suicide of a friend in similar circumstances

This poem reflects the desperation of these times but, rather than leave its readers more isolated and depressed, even its jolting last line seems to signal hope. Perhaps it is the poem's wonderful use of color and texture. Thank you!

And I guess God wasn't homeless, either. This poem puts all our modern anxieties on the table. It's not easy making it through. God knows, it's not easy. Thanks for sharing this clever poem. Dee
