The Sunday Poem: Mark Justice Hinton... Whispering, "Rain!"

Rain is on everyone's mind.  In this poem Mark Justice Hinton walks and listens among the cottonwoods that make up the Rio Grande Bosque.

April is National Poetry Month and for the second year in a row HInton is writing a daily poem.  They are available to be read (and heard) on his famous edgewiseblog group of websites. One could do worse in these tense political times than to spend a few moments scrolling down and/or listening to the words of MJH.

Mark Justice HInton is an Albuquerque blogging icon.  He is also the author of six books in the "For Dummies" series concerning Window 7 and digital photography.

Whispering, "Rain!"

In this dry year,

the cottonwood leaves linger

late in December.

They rattle

a parched prayer

or poem, perhaps.

Whispering, “rain,”

they stay long past

their fellows fallen

into mulch in the gutter.

Whispering, “rain,”

they cling to their post

on sacred duty.

Whispering, “rain,”

they cannot let go

as clouds gather.

Whispering, “rain,”

they will not drop

until they are answered.

Whispering, “Rain!”

A good poem to be reading while sitting in LaGuardia airport in New York, heading for points north. Makes me even more homesick for New Mexico!

Like Margaret Randall, I'm reading this from the east coast and missing Albuquerque. I prefer living where rain is cherished and celebrated - this poem captures that so well!
