It seems obvious that last week's 50 mph wind storm was not the wind the poet is talking about. Still, wind is wind, and it will take whatever is left on the branch.

The Palm of the Wind
I’m pleased with the wind today
as it seems pleased with the leaves
that it lifts from the tree
and dances about
like butterflies, zooming
and swirling in December’s sun.
The sun pleases too
and I know at this elevation
I’m made for it.
I thought up some weird stuff
the other day and made everybody
mad. I thought them like that.
I wonder who they really are.
Perhaps the wind will say;
it seems to know everyone
twirling in its palm.

Comment by Dee Cohen on December 4, 2011 at 5:36pm A nice breezy poem Stewart, complete with free floating wind-like thoughts. I like the feelings of acceptance you offer- to the weather and yourself. Best, Dee
Comment by Ben Moffett on December 4, 2011 at 8:08pm Good stuff. Got me to thinking that the palm and leaves might have been the launching pad of a butterfly effect, creating the great Santa Ana winds that rocked New Mexico the last few days..
Comment by Margaret Randall on December 5, 2011 at 8:45pm Stewart, what a wonderful poem! Thank you. We are in Southeast Asia, and I couldn't get on line before now to read the Sunday poem or respond. Access is spotty here. But the wind in your poem seems to be blowing here in Laos as well... we are one world, one battered hopeful world.
