Festival Chispas Presents: Palenke Soultribe + Baracutanga - Palenke Soultribe (PST), a live electronic production collective based in Los Angeles, deconstructs Afro-Colombian rhythms and blends them with modern beats, catchy bass lines, and synthesized arpeggios. Always pushing the envelope visually and conceptually, the group represents a new generation of Colombian musicians ready to break all the rules. Opening for PST is Baracutanga, a seven-piece band – representing four different countries – that arranges traditional South American rhythms in interesting ways, such as huayño and cumbia with Middle-Eastern derbuka, or the Afro-Cuban bata and Afro-Peruvian festejo blended with Andian zampoñas.

Lone Pinon CD/Vinyl Release Party - Lone Piñon is an acoustic trio from Santa Fe, New Mexico whose music celebrates the diversity of their region's cultural roots. Using violin, accordion, guitar, guitarrón, upright bass and harmony vocals in Spanish, English, and Nahuatl, the group has revived and updated the Chicano stringband style that once flourished in New Mexico, bringing a devoted and explosive musicianship to Northern New Mexican polkas and chotes, virtuosic Mexican huapango and son calentano, and classic borderlands conjunto. New Mexico has long been a crossroads of cultures, and its musical landscape reflects its history of diversity. Lone Piñon is part of a new generation of musicians who embrace the full scope of that complexity. Onstage, they cluster around a single microphone and play with a contagious energy, tying together several dozens of dance forms that resonate in their home state. The result is a new sound, rooted in respect for the past and undeniably alive.
