I am going thru the list of members to the Teaching in Albq. group - saying hi and thanks for being a member. So, Thanks for being a member of Teaching in Albq!
By the way, what was it like to have the Rocky Mountain News go away?
Well, my sis's kids were in Ft. Lupton like 88 & 89! Back when Romer was gov, I think. And I taught here in APS from 86-94, then back one more year when our daughter started Kinder in 99-00. Of course I keep tabs with the schools through our daughter's teachers, too (tho she just started hi school at the excellent Amy Biehl charter downtown on 4th & Gold). As well as some of my close friends who keep on trucking with APS.
In fact, when my current schedule eases up a bit, I plan on interviewing a few of my teacher friends on how responsibilities have changed under NCLB. When that time comes around ( maybe this winter) I'll ask you if you want to share your thoughts on that. Then I'll start a discussion with what I find out on Teaching in Albq.
I never really wanted to abandon the regular schools. I think so many of the charter schools try to reinvent the wheel too much. Amy Biehl, tho, is just the right place for our daughter - it was totally her choice and her dad and I are VERY happy with the teachers and kids there. City bus #10 runs all the way down 4th from our neighborhood to downtown, too.
You know, my sis's kids went to a school district like yours near Brighton (Ft. Lupton I think) - they attended an elementary school that was the only one with pre K - 2nd in one bldg, then only one bldg for each of the other elem and secondary levels. It was so different from massive ALBQ system. That was when Romer was Gov and all the teachers were given these great out of school training sessions on very applicable methods.
And then today was the culmination of a month long project out at Placitas Elem for me and that's Bernalillo school district ( under 6 elem schools and just one mid and one high). A totally different feeling because the district administration is in touch. APS is too big. Districts should follow the rule of smaller is better too.
Thanks for writing.
Hey Doc, how are your students this year? Hope you have a good bunch. I have wondered about your photo - is it a place in ABQ? Did you happen to see Adelita's posts this summer called Where in Burque is Adelita? She did 5 of them, all taking interesting shots like your photo and asking if folks could say the exact location. Go to her page and read/view them if you already haven't.
